JULY 2019 and still on the road.

G'Day,

We are currently in Bunbury WA and we are still moving around the country. In March this year, after we came back from our trip to Queensland, we took a couple of months off everything and I had my left knee replaced in Port Pirie Hospital which took the full 8 weeks to heal and for me to get off the walking frame and stick.

All is good now and I wish that I had it done many years ago but I suppose thats life. I know one thing is for sure I would not have got through it without Maree as she was just the best carer anybody can have, apart from being the best wife also that is.

She did everything for me during that time as although the operation was a success on the knee it caused another problem with my thigh and I could not get around very well at all and I spent most of the time on my back.

Anyhow thats all behind us now until I have the second knee done later this year I suppose.

After my knee came good we decided that it was time to get on the road again and we left Adelaide on 9th May 2019 and drove up to Broken Hill where we stayed for 2 days and had a good look around the town.

On the way up to Broken hill we stopped at Dareton which is about 20 kms north of Mildura where there is a veterans retreat caravan park where you can pull up and stay for as long as you like for $20 per night.

It is a great place to stay as twice a week they cook up a dinner for all the people onsite and for $5 a head you get a two course meal and veterans eat for free. They are very generous and there are a lot of blokes there that are still affected by what they have been through and don't talk about it at all.

We stayed here for three days and then headed off to Broken Hill which is only about 5 hours North of Mildura and a pretty good road as well. Broken Hill is a nice town which is fairly old and not a lot of things to do but we amused ourselves.

We left Broken Hill after a couple of days and headed east towards Cobar which is about 450 kms from Broken Hill and we stayed the night here and just vegetated as there is not a lot to do in Cobar.

The next morning we packed up the van and drove north towards Cunnamulla which is our next stop for the night. It also is a small town with many things to do and see and we set up the caravan and TV and watched some of our favourite shows.

We traveled East the next day towards the Sunshine Coast where we stayed at friends place in the glasshouse mountains. We stayed for two weeks on the coast and did some day trips into Brisbane and the Gold Coast over that time.

After our sojourn in Queensland we decided that we would then head west and drove back towards Cunnamulla on our way to Innamincka and Birdsville.

The roads out here are atrocious and extremely poorly maintained and had rocks jutting out from the dust and all together a very unpleasant journey.

However we did manage to make it into Innamincka where we stayed for a couple of days in our caravan and had refreshments at the pub which was overpriced for everything it sold but the food was really good.

We left the caravan at Innamincka for a couple of days and headed North to Birdsville where the road was even worse that the one into Innamincka. We would never use these roads ever again as the amount of damage to the underneath of the car was immeasurable.

We arrived in Birdsville and stayed at the motel there which was very comfortable and only for the roads probably worth another trip. The food and beverages prices were off the planet although good quality.

After we had finished this leg of the journey we headed further North to Mc Kinlay where the movie Crocodile Dundee was made and stayed at the caravan park in Walkabout Creek. It is a really old style pub attached to the caravan park but very nice and had great cold beer on tap.

From Mc Kinlay we drove further North to Mt Isa and along the Barkly Highway to the Barkly Homestead where we stayed for the night. Again overpriced and just OK.

Headed west and through the Three Ways service station and caravan and the South to Tennant Creek where we stayed the night at the local caravan park and has a good couple of nights. The park had a singer who performed each night for free and sang while we enjoyed a couple of ales.

The eventual destination on this leg of the trip was Alice Springs where my son and grand kids live and we stayed at their place for a week or so.

See ya in Australia
